In 1963, Mr. Heineken visited the Caribbean on a tour of his factories and saw that people were disliking his beer. Because the area had a serious lack of affordable building materials, Heineken beer bottles would constantly litter the beaches. As a solution, Mr. Heineken developed the “beer brick” or also known as “the brick that holds beer”. A new design was created for the bottles that allowed the bottles to interlock and self-align. With similar inspiration, Buddhist monks have created the Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew temple in the Sisaket province of Thailand from one million recycled beer bottles.
The building had a goal of spreading awareness about pollution and to try to get other factories like Heineken to practice similar methods. Even the washrooms and the crematorium are built of bottles, a mix of green Heineken and brown local Chang beer.
